MISSION
Serving to protect Nassau County's animals from cruel and inhumane treatment through education and enforcement.
HISTORY
Located in Nassau County, New York, the Nassau County Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals was founded in 1973 under the name, 'The League for Animal Protection' -- a nonprofit organization originally designed to protect animals in the county from abuse and neglect, and provide for their basic welfare. We also hold concurrent status as a state law enforcement agency with the special authority to enforce NYS Agriculture & Markets Law, and all other state and local humane laws. We are the only animal protection agency officially designated to operate within the county's borders.
Together, our volunteer officers, investigators, and humane workers hail from many different educational disciplines and backgrounds, and bring together a diverse wealth of knowledge, skills, and experience in the areas of investigation, law enforcement, military, wildlife, marine, emergency services, and law. They all share three common traits however -- a Love of Animals, a Pure Generosity, and a Devotion to Duty as they tirelessly work without any compensation or acknowledgment at all.
GUIDING PRINCIPLE
Our guiding principle is that all animals are intelligent, sensitive beings capable of pain and suffering, and are entitled to the same dignity, respect, and compassionate treatment expected from, and afforded to human beings.
This fundamental principle does not only apply to our companion pets, but extends to every animal in any capacity.
It is our obligation and duty to protect those rights, and prevent the needless and senseless suffering of those that cannot speak for themselves.
DESIRED GOALS*
- Securing a desperately-needed permanent office and facility -- preferably in a centralized county location -- to accept donations and contributions; care for unwanted and abandoned animals; take on staff; hold meetings; and classroom training.
- Designing and implementing a more-specialized humane education, and law enforcement training curricula.
- Owning and operating a completely self-sufficient mobile information and veterinary clinic capable of traveling throughout the county offering advice, and low-cost medical services.
*None of these goals are currently possible without enough funding, contributions, or any sponsorship.
